Charles William McLaughlin, PhD
holds a BS in science education from Northwest Missouri State University, an MS in chemistry from Kansas State University- Pittsburg, and a PhD in analytical chemistry from University of Nebraska. Dr. McLaughlin taught chemistry for more than 35 years including high school, science education courses, outreach programs, and as a visiting professor. He currently teaches general chemistry and serves as the Coordinator of General Chemistry at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He has received the Outstanding Teacher in the State award, a National Presidential Award for teaching science, and the Outstanding Campus Educator Award three times.
Marilyn Thompson, PhD
received a BA in chemistry from Carleton College, an MA in science curriculum and instruction from the University of Kansas, and a PhD in science education from the University of Kansas. Dr. Thompson’s career has included teaching physics, chemistry, and physical science while serving as science department chair. Dr. Thompson is currently an assistant professor at Arizona State University.
Dinah Zike
is an international curriculum consultant and inventor who has designed and developed educational products and three-dimensional, interactive graphic organizers for over thirty years. Dinah has a BS and an MS in educational curriculum and instruction from Texas A&M University. She is frequently a featured speaker at national, regional, and state science teacher’s conferences.

Alton Biggs
has been a biology educator in Texas public schools for more than 30 years. He has a BS and an MS in biology from Texas A & M University—Commerce. Mr. Biggs was the founding president of the Texas Association of Biology Teachers in 1985, received the National Association of Biology Teachers’ (NABT) Outstanding Biology Teacher Award for Texas in 1982 and 1995, and in 1992 was the president of the NATB.
Whitney Crispen Hagins
teaches biology at Lexington High School in Lexington, Massachusetts. She has a BA and an MA in biological sciences from Mount Holyoke College and an MAT from Duke University. In 1998, she received NSF funding for the development of molecular biology activities. In 1999, she was a Massachusetts NABT Outstanding Biology Teacher Award recipient. In 2005, she was awarded the Siemens Foundation AP Award for Math and Science Teachers for Massachusetts. She works with the Wisconsin Fast Plant Program to develop curriculum, and she enjoys sharing ideas and activities at national meetings.
William G. Holliday
is a science education professor at the University of Maryland (College Park), and before 1986, a professor at the University of Calgary (Alberta, Canada). He served as president of the National Association for Research in Science Teaching and later as an elected board member to the National Science Teachers Association. He has an MS in biological sciences and a PhD in science education. Dr. Holliday’s multifaceted teaching experience totals more than 40 years.
Chris L. Kapicka
is a retired faculty member from Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. She has a BS in biology from Boise State University, an MS in bacteriology and public health from Washington State University, and a PhD in cell and molecular physiology and pharmacology from the University of Nevada Medical School. In 1986, she received the Presidential Award for Science Teaching, and in 1988, she was awarded NABT’s Outstanding Biology Teacher Award.
Linda Lundgren
has more than 25 years of experience teaching science at the middle school, high school, and college levels, including ten years at Bear Creek High School in Lakewood, Colorado. For eight years, she was a research associate in the Department of Science and Technology at the University of Colorado at Denver. Ms. Lund gren has a BA in journalism and zoology from the University of Massachusetts and an MS in zoology from Th e Ohio State University. In 1991, she was named Colorado Science Teacher of the Year.
Ann Haley MacKenzie
currently teaches at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where she works with future high school science teachers and teaches a life science inquiry course. She is the editor of Th e American Biology Teacher for the National Association of Biology Teachers. Dr. MacKenzie has a BS in biology from Purdue University, an MEd in secondary education from the University of Cincinnati, and an EdD in curriculum and instruction from the University of Cincinnati. She is a former Ohio Teacher of the Year and Presidential Award Winner for Secondary School Science.
William D. Rogers
is a faculty member in the Department of Biology at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He has a BA and an MA in biology from Drake University and a Doctor of Arts in biology from Idaho State University. He has received teaching awards for outstanding contributions to general education, and he has also received funding from the American Association of Colleges and Universities to study diff erent approaches to science teaching.
Marion B. Sewer
is an assistant professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Scholar. She received a BS in biochemistry from Spelman College in 1993 and a PhD in pharmacology from Emory University in 1998. Dr. Sewer studies how the integration of various signaling pathways controls steroid hormone biosynthesis.

Laurel Dingrando
is currently serving as the Secondary Science Coordinator for the Garland Independent School District. Mrs. Dingrando has a BS in Microbiology with a minor in Chemistry from Texas Tech University and an MAT in Science from University of Texas at Dallas. She taught Chemistry for 25 years in the Garland Independent School District. She is a member of the American Chemical Society, National Science Teachers Association, Science Teachers Association of Texas, Texas Science Educators Leadership Association, and T3 (Teachers Teaching with Technology).
Nicholas Hainen
taught chemistry, AP chemistry, and physics in the Worthington City Schools, Worthington, Ohio, for 31 years. Mr. Hainen holds BS and MA degrees in Science Education from The Ohio State University, majoring in chemistry and physics. His honors and awards include: American Chemical Society Outstanding Educator in Chemical Sciences; The Ohio State University Honor Roll of Outstanding High School Teachers; Ashland Oil Company Golden Apple Award; and Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. Mr. Hainen is a member of the American Chemical Society and the ACS Division of Chemical Education.
Cheryl Wistrom
is an associate professor of chemistry at Saint Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana where she has been honored with both the Science Division and college faculty teaching awards. She has taught chemistry, biology, and science education courses at the college level since 1990 and is also a licensed pharmacist. She earned her BS degree in biochemistry at Northern Michigan University, a BS in pharmacy at Purdue University, and her MS and PhD in biological chemistry at the University of Michigan. Dr. Wistrom is a member of the Indiana Academy of Science, the National Science Teachers Association, and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
Dinah Zike

Program Authors
Paul W. Zitzewitz
lead author, is a professor of physics at the University of Michigan – Dearborn. He received his B.A. from Carleton College, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University, all in physics. Dr. Zitzewitz has taught physics to undergraduates for 32 years, and is an active experimenter in the field of atomic physics with more than 50 research papers. He was named Fellow of the American Physical Society for his contributions to physics and science education for high school and middle school teachers and students. He has been the president of the Michigan section of the American Association of Physics Teachers and chair of the American Physical Society’s Forum on Education.
Todd George Elliott
C.E.T., C.Tech., teaches in the Electrotechnology Department at Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He received Technology diplomas in electrical and electronics engineering technology from Niagrara College. Todd has held various positions in the fields of semiconductor manufacturing, optical encoding, and electrical design. He is a pioneer in the field of distance education and is a developer of electrical/electronic technology courses, and works closely with major community colleges.
David G. Haase
is an Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor of Physics at North Carolina State University. He earned a B.A. in physics and mathematics at Rice University and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in physics at Duke University where he was a J.B. Duke Fellow. He has been an active researcher in experimental low temperature and nuclear physics. He teaches undergraduate and graduate physics courses and has worked many years in K-12 teacher training. He is the founding director of The Science House at NC State which annually serves over 3000 teachers and 20,000 students across North Carolina. He has co-authored over 100 papers in experimental physics and in science education. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He received the Alexander Holladay Medal for Excellence, NC State University; the Pegram Medal for Physics Teaching Excellence; and was chosen 1990 Professor of the Year in the state of North Carolina by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
Kathleen A. Harper
is an instructional consultant with Faculty & TA Development and an instructor in physics at Ohio State University. She received her M.A. in physics and B.S. in electrical engineering and applied physics from Case Western Reserve University and her Ph.D. in physics from Ohio State University. Her research interests include the teaching and learning of problem-solving skills and the development of alternative problem formats.
Michael R. Herzog
consults for the New York State Education Department on physics curriculum and test development, after having taught physics for 27 years at Hilton Central High School. He holds a B.A. in physics from Amherst College and M.S. and M.A. degrees in engineering and education form the University of Rochester. He serves on the executive committee of the New York State Section of AAPT and is a founding member of the New York State Physics Mentors organization.
Jane Bray Nelson
teaches at University High School in Orlando, Florida. She received her bachelor’s degree from Florida State University, and her M.A. from Memphis State University. She is a National Board Certified Teacher in Adolescents and Young Adults-Science. She has received a Toyota TAPESTRY Award and a Tandy Scholars Award. Ina ddition, she has received the Disney American Teacher Award in Science, the National Presidential Award for Science Teaching, the Florida High School Science Teacher Award, and been inducted into the National Teacher’s Hall of Fame.
Jim Nelson
teaches at University High School in Orlando, Florida. He received his bachelor’s degree in physics from Lebanon Valley College and M.A.’s in secondary education from Temple University and in physics from Clarkson University. He has received the AAPT Distinguished Service Award, the AAPT Excellence in Pre-College Physics Teaching award, and the National Presidential Award for Science Teaching. Jim is the PI of the Physics Teaching Resource Agent program, and has served on the executive board of AAPT as high school representative and as president.
Charles A. Schuler
is a writer of textbooks about electricity, electronics, industrial electronics, ISO 9000, and digital signal processing. He taught electronics and electrical engineering technology at California University of Pennsylvania for 30 years.
